Kanga Cricket Round Robin Day.

Last Wednesday 2/4/2014 St Mark’s had 6 teams go and compete at the District Round Robin Day. There was an All Star girls and boys team, while there was also 2 Future Star boys and girl teams.

There was great excitement amongst all the children with some terrific cricket played. Amongst the future stars there was some exciting games with many boundaries being hit and some exciting bowling, with several stumps being knocked over. The children really showed tremendous improvement and had a very enjoyable day.

In the All Stars competition the boys team had several changes from the weekly team, with input of a couple of Year 5 children. They started off strongly and then played even stronger as the day went on, winning all their games by large margins, resulting in them qualifying for the final. Unfortunately for the girls the day didn’t start off as well for them with them losing their first two games in close results before finishing off their day with a win, meaning they missed out on the final.

The boys final was a very exciting match with the game coming down to the last over. The total runs off the bat had Kingswood coring 111 while ST Mark’s scored 94, which had the Kingswood players very excited. Fortunately St Mark’s had taken 7 wickets (x5=35), while Kingswood had only taken 3 (x5=15), meaning the final scores were ST Mark’s 129 defeated Kingswood 126. It was a fantastic match with awesome skills displayed, however the most pleasing aspect was the sportsmanship amongst the boys, many of the boys knowing each other from cricket rivalry on the weekends.

Congratulations to all the children on a very successful day!!!

Victorian Primary School Golf

On Tuesday 1st April St Mark’s had two children competing at Primary School Golf events to qualify for Regional competitions. They played at Pakenham GC and played extremely well. The boys Matthew Dunne and Cooper Clohesy managed to play extremely well, resulting in Matt coming 1st and Coooper 4th meaning they’ve both qualified for the Regional competition in November. Keep up the practice boys, you are performing extremely well!

SSV Trials- Football and Netball

Congratulations to the following children who participated in the football trial on the 31st March and the netball trial 25th March:

Football trials- Michael Lewis, Andrew Kovac, Jack Cain, Nathan Gough and Lachlan Benton.

Netball trials- Kate Ebert, Ebony McCarthy and Nicola Adams.

All children performed extremely well amongst the elite players in the District and fortunately a few of the children qualified to perform in the next round of Division trials next term.

In the football trials Michael Lewis qualified while in the netball both Kate and Nicola qualified. Good luck to all these children for their trials next term!

Sport- Hockey

In the final week of term St Mark’s was lucky enough to have a representative from the Mentone Hockey Club, their international import from Holland come and teach the children some enjoyable hockey skills.

Many children seem to enjoy the experience with several stating they’d like to experience playing hockey. If your child would like to become involved these are the details for the club:

The Mentone Hockey Club is on the hunt for the next Olympic star. With the help of Hockey Australia and Hockey Victoria’s junior recruitment program, they might just find them.

Hookin2Hockey is Hockey Australia’s national recruitment program and provides the opportunity for young participants to learn the fundamental skills of hockey in a safe and fun environment.

At Mentone Hockey Club program provides children aged 5 to 12 with the opportunity to learn the basic skills of hockey and game play, building their confidence to join the game. A core principle we hold is 1 senior coach per 10 participants - to best ensure a quality experience. And who knows, they might just discover the next Jamie Dwyer of the Kookaburras (five time world player of the year) or Mentone's very own Kary Chau (pictured) of the Hockeyroos.

Over ten thousand youngsters participated in Hookin2Hockey nation-wide in 2012, and the program is expected to be even bigger in 2013.

Every participant will receive a pack that includes a hockey stick,  shin pads, fold out backyard hockey goal, a replica Australian playing top, a participant medallion, a highlights package DVD and a video message from a Hockeyroo or Kookaburra.
